Consulting vs. Tech Casing Sample Questions Resources

3 FALL 2018 ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING
MICROSOFT IBM ACCENTURE AMAZON WIPRO TECHNOLOGIES SALESFORCE WAYFAIR MASTERCARD ADOBE T-MOBILE

4 TECH INTERVIEWING OVERVIEW
Behavioral questions (“Tell me about a time when you…”) Research company values (i.e. Amazon leadership principles) Emphasis on working with cross-functional teams (motivation and influence) Casing is tech industry specific, and very often the case is related to the company you’re interviewing for. Using CTRL+F on MCA casebooks to find industry specific cases is helpful Tech casing is primarily used to test your knowledge of working through ambiguous problems in the industry--best way to prepare is to know what is going on in the industry: Risks / Opportunities: company & industry Acquisitions Trends

5 COMMON THEMES User Focus
Designing solutions to meet user needs (stated or inferred) Data Emphasis on how to identify, collect, and use data to make decisions Specific metrics and how to leverage Practical considerations How to actually execute on potential solutions (order of operations, testing, etc.) No single right answer Brainstorming broad list of potential solutions and narrowing down based on case-specific considerations Technical “expertise” Be comfortable discussing relevant technology (ad tech, cloud computing, etc.)

6 CONSULTING VS. TECH CASING
Case Component Tech Problem statement designed to be followed by your clarifying questions. Prompt & Response Straightforward problem statement or question. Usually not as tricky or complicated. “Do you mind if I have a second to get my thoughts?”, followed by buckets and bullet points and structured framework Post-Prompt Framework Flexibility in how you structure your response. Creativity allowed. Usually just about bucket titles, rather than bullet points Hand-drawn spreadsheet expected to be correct Back of the Envelope Math (sometimes make assumptions) Maybe a few quick revenue or price calculations if any Brainstormed list or structure of solutions; showcase for creativity Solution Brainstorming & Problem Solving (overlap!) Also a brainstormed list or structure of solutions; showcase for creativity Structured recommendation, risks, next steps Structured Recommendation Usually plan of action based on brainstorm if any

7 SAMPLE CASES DATA: The number of users who upload videos to Vimeo has plateaued (1-2% growth year-over-year), how would you diagnose the root cause and what data would you need? How would you increase Google Drive use by 20%? PRODUCT: How would you design a refrigerator for blind people? Tell me about an App you use? What do you like / dislike? How would you improve? How would you prioritize? How would measure that improvement? MARKET SIZING: How many people graduate from college in the United States each year? How many smartphone cases are sold in Verizon stores each year? TECHNICAL: What would you consider in evaluating whether or not to migrate an application from an on-premise datacenter to the public cloud?
