In Genesis 27:1–40 Jacob uses deception, motivated by his mother Rebecca to lay claim to his blind father Isaac's blessing that was inherently due to the firstborn, Esau.
As a result, Jacob becomes the spiritual leader of the family after Isaac's death and the heir of the promises of Abraham Genesis 27:37

Jacob gets the name Israel after he wrestles with the Angel of God as he is traveling to Esau. His hip is knocked out of joint but he keeps on wrestling and gains the name Israel.
