3 Figure 2 Stem cells divide to self-renew as well as to produce differentiating daughter cells. Most stem cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, divide slowly, whereas differentiating cells are derived from a lineage committed, rapidly dividing daughter cell. After transplantation, e.g., the stem cells divide symmetrically to produce identical, self-renewing daughter cells to replenish the stem cell pool (transient amplifying pool). Some of these cells then divide asymmetrically after one or more self-renewing, symmetric divisions to give rise to one identical stem cell and another precursor cell that divides rapidly and symmetrically to give rise to committed progenitors.
