1 Drill: 9/09/2013 What’s the difference between real and applied texture?

2 Real texture vs. implied texture
Real texture is the feel of a surface. Applied texture is the appearance of a surface. When texture can be felt, it is real. When texture is apparent, or illusional, it is implied.

3 Which objects are real and which are applied?

4 Elements of Art: Line Shape Texture Balance Value Color Form

5 Learning Goal: Students will define real and
applied texture in order to create a spread using mixed media collage techniques.

6 Texture An element of art which refers to the surface quality or “feel” of an object, it’s smoothness, roughness, softness. Textures may be actual or simulated. Actual textures can be felt by the fingers, while simulated textures are suggested by the way an artists has painted areas in certain areas of a picture.

An element of art which refers to the continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point. It may be two-dimensional (pencil on paper), three-dimensional (wire), or implied (the edge of a shape or form). Often, it is an outline, contour or silhouette. It can have a variety of thickness.

23 SHAPE An element of art, it is an enclosed space defined and determined by the other art elements such as line, color, value, and texture. In painting and drawing, shapes may take on the appearance of solid three-dimensional objects even though they are limited to two dimensions-length and width. This two-dimensional character of shape distinguishes it from form, which has depth as well as length and width.
