1 BELLWORK! What is ATP?

2 Pre-Test Please take out a number 2 pencil. We are going to take a pretest about cellular energy

3 Cellular Energy Ch 8.1

4 Energy is the ability to do work
What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work Thermodynamics is the study of the flow and transformation of energy in the universe. What is work? What are some different types of energy transformations?

5 Laws of Thermodynamics
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted into different forms. When energy is converted some energy is lost as heat. Conservation of energy No transfer is effiecient

6 How do organisms get energy?
Autotrophs are organisms that can make their own food for energy Ex. Plants and some bacteria Heterotrophs are organisms that must ingest food for energy Ex. Animals What are some examples? Which organism is an autotroph? Which is a heterotroph?

7 Metabolic Pathways Metabolism is all of the chemical reactions that occur in the body. Photosynthesis: light energy from the Sun is converted to chemical energy for use by the cell Cellular respiration: organic molecules are broken down to release energy for use by the cell Our metabolism helps us maintain what? Homeostasis What kind of organisms can do photosynthesis? What kind of organisms do cellular respiration?

8 How do cells store energy?
Adenosine TriPhosphate (ATP) – most important biological molecule

9 ATP in cells ATP releases energy when the bond between the second and third phosphates is broken. Forms Adenosine DiPhosphate (ADP) and a free phosphate group. How do we put ATP back together?
