DNA and Chromosomes Target: I will be able to explain the relationship of DNA to chromosomes and genes and identify the parts of a chromosome. DNA is really large. To fit into the cell, it must coil up into chromosomes. When the DNA is coiled tightly in the nucleus, it is a chromosome. Histone: The protein that DNA coils tightly around. Chromosomes: cell structures that contain genetic information. Passed on from one generation of cells to the next. Located in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. Pg. 93

Parts of a Chromosome: 1. Gene: A section of DNA that codes for (provides the instructions for making) a protein. 2. Chromatid: one arm of a chromosome. A double stranded chromosomes has sister chromatids that are identical. 3. Centromere: The place where sister chromatids are attached.
