Europe was expanding for resources Social Darwinism suggested most competitive nations would survive Manifest Destiny – Idea God wants US to rule “Anglo-Saxonism” led to belief of superior English speaking society Congress authorized a new Navy b/c many thought US should dominate the world This newly created Navy could defend US overseas interests

Political movement: collection of ideas to help fix society It grew out of the Populist Movement Society had a lot of problems due to industrialization

Journalists who investigated social conditions Circulated cheap magazines/papers Scandal /Corruption Raised awareness to problems – reform ensues

How did Progressives Reform Government?
Made it more democratic with direct primaries Initiatives allowed citizens to introduce legislation Referendums allowed citizens to vote directly on laws (instead of their representative) Recall elections allowed people to remove politicians from office

Progressive ideas like: Child labor / school Alcohol Health and safety Codes Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony led the charge 1920 – 19th Amendment passed

In your groups look at the map on pg 165 and answer questions 1 & 2 We will share out in 4 minutes

Group 1 Group 2 Read Page 166 – Reforming Society
Make a 4 column chart to record key ideas from each section. Be sure to focus on the following: Why did people suddenly oppose children working? What kind of health / safety laws were passed during this era? What happened at Triangle Shirtwaist Company? What was prohibition and what was it’s goals? How did the Progressives go after Big Business? Completing the Compare and Contrast Venn Diagram activity. Create a Venn Diagram that highlights the similarities and differences between Populism (last unit) and Progressivism Use the paper and the markers to make your diagram Make sure you are including specific examples (e.g. do not put “they are both things from History class”)
