1 Nazi Control

2 Read p.94 Make notes on: ‘Germanising’ Western Poland – what was this?
How were the Polish Jews treated? Old/young? What was the name of the conference where the final solution was decided? Was the final solution decided from the start? (Internationalists/Structuralists)

3 Look at sources 28 & 29 (p. 92 to 93) What do both sources suggest? Why would they both suggest this? How convincing are both interpretations?

4 Good learning: Identify key aspects of sources from previous sessions
Great learning: Explain Nazi control on the German people through the use of propaganda and censorship Even better: Evaluate how much of an impact Nazi social control had on German society and apply this to an exam question

5 Nazi Control The Nazis under Hitler took control of the media and the Churches, restricted culture and ruthlessly dealt with any opposition Total control over peoples lives

6 Goebbels and Propaganda
What is propaganda? Propaganda is a form of communication to distribute information. The information is designed to make people feel a certain way or to believe a certain thing. It is often hard to tell whether the information is true or false!

7 Joseph Goebbels - Passionately believed in Hitler as the savior of Germany - His mission was to make sure that other people believed this too - He decided what people would see/hear - A powerful speaker and very good at his job

8 If you were in charge of propaganda in Nazi Germany what would you do?

9 Blaming Jews for Germany’s problems
Goebbels understood that propaganda worked best if people were repeatedly given some basic ideas with short messages and powerful images What? Key messages: Blaming Jews for Germany’s problems Criticising the Treaty of Versailles Making Germany great again How? These messages continuously appeared all over Germany on posters, in newspapers. Speeches, films + radio Long Live Germany

10 Newspapers Only stories that showed the Nazis doing good things were permitted There were negative stories about Germany’s ‘enemies’ Newspapers that didn’t comply were closed down Newspapers became very dull – circulation fell by about 10%

11 In films All films had to show the Nazis in a good way and their ‘enemies’ in a bad way Goebbels approved all storylines All films had to carry a pro- Nazi message (fictional or factual)

12 In books, at the theatre & in music:
Writers were forced to write books, plays and songs that praised Hitler and the Nazis No books could be published without Goebbels permission (In high-profile ‘book- burning’ Bestseller Mein Kampf In books, at the theatre & in music:

13 On the radio All radio stations were under Nazi control to broadcast Nazi ideas Cheap radios were produced that could only tune in to Nazi-controlled stations Loudspeakers were placed in the streets, in factories and cafes to air broadcasts Radio messages repeated over and over again (e.g. inferiority of Jews) until many German people came to believe them

14 In public Impressive mass rallies were held to celebrate Hitler’s greatness Huge arenas were built where carefully choreographed shows were put on with choirs, bands, speeches, fireworks and air displays Posters appeared all over Germany showing Hitler’s power and the good things the Nazis were doing

15 Nuremburg rally – took place in the summer every year
Gave people a sense of belonging to a great movement Rallies also showed the German people the power of the state and convinced them that ‘every other German’ fully supported the Nazis Nazis = created order out of chaos so the whole rally was organised to emphasise this order

16 Censorship What? The tight government control of what people hear, read, see, or say Why? Goebbels felt that propaganda wasn’t enough to control what people thought. He wanted to stop ideas being shared that might challenge the Nazi message How? The Nazis introduced strict censorship laws How? Books, films, news articles, even jokes, were banned if they were viewed as harmful to the Nazis or Hitler

17 P. 95 look at source 31, answer questions a-e in the ‘think’ box

18 How did each of these groups contribute to the genocide? P.94
The Civil Service bureaucracy Police forces The SS The Wehrmacht Industry The German people Definitions on: Master race, ‘Undesirables’, Aryan, Ghetto, Final solution

19 In for Next Wednesday!!! Flip Learning ‘Describe two examples of propaganda in Nazi Germany that the Nazis used to control what information Germans received’ [6 marks] Start with ‘Propaganda is … (definition)’ Propaganda was used by the Nazis … (to do what?) Two examples of propaganda …
