14 Muscles of anterior compartment of thigh

15 Definition: pyramidal space in front of upper 1/3 of thigh.
Femoral Triangle Definition: pyramidal space in front of upper 1/3 of thigh. Boundaries: Sup (base): inguinal ligament (lower border of external oblique, extending from ASIS to pubic tubercle). Lat: sartorious (med border). Med: adductor longus (med border). Roof: skin, superficial fascia & deep fascia. Floor: (med to lat): adductor longus, pectineus, psoas major & iliacus.

16 contents 1-Femoral sheath: fascial sheath surrounding upper part of femoral vessels. It contains: Med: femoral canal: conical compartment to allow expansion of femoral V. Intermediate: femoral V. Lat: femoral A and femoral branch of genitofemoral N. 2-Femoral N. 3-Deep inguinal Lymph nodes.

17

18 Adductor (subsartorial) canal
Definition: tunnel in the middle 1/3 of thigh. Begins at the apex of femoral triangle. Ends at the opening of adductor magnus (becomes continuous with popliteal fossa). Boundaries: Anterolateral: vastus medialis. Anteromedial (roof): fibrous roof and sartorious. Post (floor): adductor longus & magnus.

19 contents 1-Femoral A. 2-Femoral V. 3-Saphenous N: enters the canal through upper end and leaves it behind Sartorius, pierces deep fascia to become subcutaneous in the leg. 4-N to vastus medialis: passes through upper end to vastus medialis. 5-Descending genicular A (of femoral).

20 Femoral nerve Root value: Lumbar plexus, L2,3,4 (ant rami, post division). Course & relations: Descends between psoas major & iliacus. Passes deep to inguinal ligament to enter femoral triangle. End: 4 cm (1½ inches) below inguinal ligament as muscular & cutaneous branches.

21 Branches To hip joint. To knee joint.
Muscular: iliacus (in abdomen), pectineus, sartorious & quadriceps. Articular: To hip joint. To knee joint.

22 Cutaneous Med cutaneous N of thigh: skin of med side of thigh.
Intermediate cutaneous N of thigh: skin of front of thigh. Saphenous N: Descends in femoral triangle → adductor canal → passes behind Sartorius → pierces deep fascia & becomes subcutaneous. Supplies the skin of med side of leg & foot. Cutaneous

23 Injury of femoral N (in the thigh)
Motor: paralysis of quadriceps → loss of knee extension. Sensory: loss of sensation of the ant & med sides of thigh & med side of leg & foot.
