Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s CASE STUDY Andy Wills – Marine Conservation Manager Working within the Marine Conservation team (MCT) is a great experience and the team has an array of responsibilities and duties to manage. Whether it is leading on fishery management assessment work for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) which can lead to the implementation of marine conservation byelaws or EC measures, reviewing wildlife licence applications or responding to marine pollution emergencies, the work is constant, interesting and busy. A large majority of my offshore MPA role is about cross working with internal and external teams, liaising with Defra policy colleagues in the joint delivery of MPA management, working with the statutory nature conservation bodies, mainly JNCC in understanding the extent of the MPA marine features and their habitat. Working with the MMOs statistical team in the collection of VMS and landings evidence, as well as working with Member states in collecting their fleets VMS and landings evidence. I enjoy being a key part to the delivery of management measures, presenting the fisheries evidence and the management proposals, being involved and providing input to industry stakeholder and member state workshops. I enjoy supporting Defra in the review of other member states management proposals within members’ waters, reviewing the potential impacts they may have towards the UK and advising Defra on issues and risks. In general a great area to work in. Candidate Information Pack

Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s CASE STUDY Claire Bowers– Wildlife Officer My job is never the same from one day to the next. I never know what might be in my inbox in the morning! As my job involves mainly giving guidance and advice on protected species legislation and enforcement I get all sorts of queries from import of sea cucumbers to taking sperm samples from turbot!!! Because of the legislation I work with I tend to have involvement with most teams in the MMO including marine licensing, planning, operations room, training team and coastal offices. I also work with Defra species conservation and wildlife teams a lot on species issues including bycatch, stranding and enforcement of protected species EU regulations such as the finning and pinger regulations. Within MCT I get involved in the MPA work as well providing advice on considerations of species legislation and management especially with the new harbour porpoise SAC. Issuing and advising on wildlife licences is an interesting area of work too especially where there are complexities that require more consideration and sometimes some lateral thinking. Supporting the coast in their investigations and wildlife work has helped MMO secure a recent conviction for the release of non-native lobsters into our waters which was the first successful wildlife court cast the MMO has had. Providing training on wildlife enforcement to coastal officers and the police is a really interesting and satisfying part of my job and helps build links between our team and enforcement on the ground. Because of the species and activities involved I do tend to deal a lot with harassed or dead things, trying to stop people harassing them or making them dead or advising them how they can legally harass or kill them which won't be every ones cup of tea but the prevention side of things is very satisfying and I like to think it makes a difference.
