1 Why Are We Even Here? June 3

2 Think About It … Think about when you completed a project for your yard or for your house … how did you feel when it was all done? God’s creation was (and is) an amazing achievement. We look at nature and look into the night skies and are blown away by both the microscopic and the vastness of the universe – both extreme orders of magnitude Even more amazing is the fact God created us to live in fellowship with Him.

3 Listen for what God says.
Genesis 1:1-5 (NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day.

4 God Is the Creator Creation Video

5 God Is the Creator What did God do on the first day of creation?
Use your imagination … how do you think it looked and even sounded when God created something out of nothing? Consider that very first verse … how does accepting that statement as fact impact how you view life and the world?

6 God Is the Creator When might someone’s life feel formless and empty, as described in verse 2? What can God do for us when we experience emptiness?

7 Listen for plural pronouns.
Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

8 Created in God’s Image What do the verses say about how God created man? What is different about the creation of man and the creation of the other creatures? What do you think it means when you read that you are made “in the image of God”? What evidence do you see in this passage that God places high value on us?

9 Created in God’s Image How does the fact that people are made in God’s image affect the way you feel about yourself? How can you celebrate the blessing of being made in God’s image? God places high value on us … how can we place a higher value on others?

10 Listen for God’s evaluation of His work.
Genesis 1:28-31 (NIV) God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.

11 Listen for God’s evaluation of His work.
They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-- everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.

12 Stewards of God’s Creation
What actions of God stated in verse 28 suggest a unique relationship between God and human beings? What do we see in this passage that God provides ? For whom are these provisions made? How did God describe what he had created?

13 Stewards of God’s Creation
How do we reconcile these verses with the reality of times of famine and those who suffer from chronic malnutrition? In times when food sources are scarce, why should Christians offer care?

14 Application Remember your Creator.
Ecclesiastes 12:1 encourages us to “Remember your Creator.” When you gaze at the night sky this week, remember that God spoke every star and planet into existence, and thank Him for His creativity and power.

15 Application Memorize Matthew 6:26.
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” God cares more for you than He does a sparrow. Repeat this verse when you’re tempted to think He’s no longer on your side.

16 Application Begin a relationship with God.
God created you for a purpose and to relate to you. His Son, Jesus, died for you. If you would like to begin a relationship with the very Creator of the universe, talk with your group leader or pastor about how you can make that happen.
