2 Precipitation Range The average rainfall is 10 to 17 inches, or centimeters annually. Most of the rain is in the winter months. The winter is the Chaparral's rainy season. There is little if any rain in the summer.

3 During the winter, the temperature can get as low as 30° F, or -1°C.
The summers can get up to 100° F (38°C).  The average temperature in the chaparral biome is 64° F (18°C). Temperature Range

4 Soil Characteristics Chaparral Soil is nutrient poor, with elements of magnesium, chromium, and nickel, which are toxic to most grassland plants. The soil is thin, porous, rocky, vulnerable to erosion and infertile. The soil is dry, made up of sand and decomposed granite, has low organic content, and well drained.

5 Plant Adaptations Only shrubs and plants with hard leaves can survive. Leaves are hairy to collect moisture from air. Plants must be able to go a long time without water. Some plants’ seeds will only germinate with the presence of fire. Other plants have flammable oils that catch fire easily, to induce this fiery germination process.

Animal Adaptations Examples of animals that are adapted to the Chaparral are the Coyote, Jackrabbit, Lizard, Mule Deer, Praying mantis, and Ladybug. The animals that live in the Chaparral biome are small and adapted to hot, dry climates. They don't need a lot of water to survive and are nocturnal.

7 Location Chaparrals can be found from 30° to 50° N and 30° to 40° S latitudes. The chaparral climate occurs in central and southern coast of California, the coast areas of the Mediterranean Sea, coastal western and southern Australia, the Chilean coast, and the Cape Town region of South Africa.  Chaparral regions occur in hot and dry regions that receive moisture from the cool coastal ocean.

8 Special Characteristics and Sensitivities
Occasional fires in the chaparral biome can be helpful because they help balance out the living organisms and nonliving organisms.  A fully-grown Chaparral is characterized by dense, impenetrable yet highly flammable thickets. According to the California Academy of Sciences, Mediterranean shrubland contains more than 20 percent of the world's plant diversity. California's Wildfire Suppression policies are controversial because they may allow an unhealthy buildup of dead organic matter leading to unnaturally large wildfires. This biome is usually found where westerly winds prevail, thus it is usually on the western side of continents (look back at the map!) Special Characteristics and Sensitivities
