19 Things to look for in a Recommender
Can follow through and meet deadlines Knows you well and has a high opinion of you Can speak to your character and personality Can write a high-quality letter Someone admissions reps can trust to be objective (sorry but your mom doesn’t count)

20 A Few more thoughts on recommenders
Challenging class vs. good grades Can talk about your work ethic, intellect, ability to deal with adversity Multiple activities – teachers that know you not just in the classroom Recent teachers – your 7th grade teachers don’t really count Gratitude – Following up with a recommender can be a really nice gesture! They put time into recommending you so you can put a little time into thanking them!

21 Asking for a Letter of Rec...
Ask in Person → best way, more personal, more likely to remember you asked Ask via → professional, clear, concise, have explicit details

To: (Correct person’s address) Subject: Letter of Recommendation Body of the Hello (Person’s name), I am applying to (specific college/internship/scholarship/etc). This application requires a letter of recommendation. I was wondering if you would be willing to write one for me? They have asked that the letter include (list everything the application asks for such as GPA, activities involved in outside of school, leadership skills, etc.). I have attached my resume* that includes my contact information and other information you may find helpful when writing the letter. The letter is due (state due date). If you are unable to write one at this time, I understand. Let me know what you decide. Thank you for your time!
