1 Religions 9: Preparation for Mid- Term Test

2 Materials Textbook: Bremmer (100 pp.) Class notes
Texts read (Homer, Hesiod, Euripides) Use two question lists to prepare for mid-term!

3 Questions for preparation mid-term
1. ‘I believe, but do not practise’. Why can this remark not have been made by an inhabitant of ancient Greece? 2. Which 2 main interpretations of animal sacrifice are there (give names plus interpretation)? Indicate how both approaches have their merits but are at the same time too reductive.

4 3. Odyssey 44-69: In verse 28 Zeus is called ‘father of gods and men’. What is the role of Zeus among the Greek gods and what is the difference with the God of Christianity (‘God the Father’)? Support your answer with a quote from the text. Who is ‘that man’ (46)? Why does he ‘lie low in a destruction’? Compare this man and Odysseus in terms of eusebeia. Why is the one considered eusebes and the other not? Quote from the text.
