1
Matter and it's Physical Properties
2
Remember what Matter is?
Anything that takes up space and has mass
3
Do you remember your States of Matter?
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma (we don’t worry about plasma in 5th grade)
4
So what are all the physical properties of matter?
Remember that when we learned about traits, physical traits were those that were part of the body of the organism – not behaviors. So physical properties of matter are simply the properties that are part of the substance without changing it into a new substance (no chemical changes). These are things you can detect with your senses or measure!
5
Examples of physical properties
6
We will spend most of our time on:
Density Solubility Conductivity Magnetism You should already be able to find the following using your measurement skills! Length Mass Volume
7
Physical Properties of Matter
Boiling Point – The temperature at which liquid matter turns into a gas. The boiling point of water is 100oC.
8
Physical Properties of Matter
Melting Point – The temperature at which solid matter turns to liquid Freezing Point – The temperature at which liquid matter turns to solid The freezing/melting point of water is 0oC.
9
Physical Properties of Matter Mass
The amount of matter in an object The gram is the metric unit for mass
10
Physical Properties of Matter
Volume The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Also know as Capacity. Can be measured by the amount of water an object can move or displace. All states of matter have volume, but only solids have a set shape.
11
Physical Properties of Matter
Density – The amount of matter within a certain amount of volume. We will focus on relative density in water. Which do you think has a greater density? Bowling Ball or Soccer Ball
12
Physical Properties of Matter
Density – The more dense an object the more it will sink and the less dense an object the more it will float in water.
13
Physical Properties of Matter
Solubility – The ability for a substance to dissolve In a solution ingredients of a mixture are spread out evenly throughout. You usually cannot see the dissolved ingredients (other than through color change).
14
Physical Properties of Matter
Magnetism – Property of attraction to a magnet. The entire Earth has a magnetic field!
15
Physical Properties of Matter
Conductivity: Ability of a substance to allow electricity or heat to pass through it. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Materials know as insulators block heat or electricity. Thermal (heat) insulators are things like styrofoam Electrical insulators are things like: rubber, plastic, cotton
