self-determination theory (SDT)
looking at wellbeing through the lens of self-determination theory – SDT is a general theory of motivation & personality that has been evolving for over three decades SDT suggests humans, like plants or other animals, intrinsically ‘strive’ for need satisfaction & flourishing social contexts can support or thwart this need striving with major effects for health & well-being Deci, E. L. and R. M. Ryan (1985). Intrinsic motivation and self-determination in human behavior. New York, Plenum. Ryan, R. M. and E. L. Deci (2017). three (+one) key psychological needs
within SDT, needs (whether physiological or psychological) are defined as “nutrients that are essential for growth, integrity, and well-being” autonomy, competence, relatedness (& beneficence) are four highly researched key psychological needs – how they can best be satisfied will vary with individual strengths, life stage, social context & culture personal goals that lead to satisfaction of these four basic needs will promote wellbeing, but individuals – due to personal life history, organizational environment & societal values – may well strive for goals that do not satisfy these needs or enhance their wellbeing Deci, E. L. and R. M. Ryan (2000). "The "what" and "why" of goal pursuits: human needs and the self-determination of behavior " Psychological Inquiry 11: Martela, F., et al. (2017). Meaningfulness as satisfaction of autonomy, competence, relatedness, & beneficence: Comparing the 4 satisfactions & positive affect as predictors of meaning in life. J Happiness Studies (28 March)
