1 Compare and Contrast

2 Argumentative Strategies
Using compare and contrast: To demonstrate the similarities and/or differences in and between ideas, topics, subjects, etc. Depends on the topic and your purpose. Can help your audience understand a point or idea. Sometimes a pattern develops on its own, but you can use Block or Alternating patterns to structure your comparison.

3 Argumentative Strategies
Using compare and contrast: Block Pattern: Discuss one point, and then discuss the similar/opposed point Follow the same structure for each point So, discuss points A, B, then C of topic 1; then discuss points A, B, then C of topic 2

4 Argumentative Strategies
Using compare and contrast: Alternating Pattern: Intertwine the two (or more) points So, discuss point A of topic 1; then point A of topic 2; point B of topic 1; then point B of topic 2; etc.

9 Introduction Strategies, continued
Statement of Thesis: Most direct method: immediately tells reader what is happening in your essay Which method do you want to use in for your Long Essay? Why? Will it be effective? How will it affect the reader? Think about these questions as you begin to write your introductions. 9

10 In-Class Assignment Take about 30 minutes. Break into groups of 2-3.
In a brief sentence or two, identify and explain which of the strategies discussed were used in the composing of these introductions. If you cannot identify one of these strategies in the introduction, then describe what the author did. Write a few sentences explaining why you think the introduction is effective, ineffective, etc. Tell the writer how his/her introduction can be improved. 10

11 Example Introduction 1:
In this essay, I plan to research the ethical issues of Hillary Clinton’s Healthcare plan, this is going to be a very good cause for many people in America, because it will help everyone not only the poor but its going to provide medical care for everyone just like car insurance everyone should be covered in case of an accident, well just like car accidents medical emergencies occur everyday taking many lives and burying many burdens in lots of families in America due to healthcare because everyone is not covered and if they are most are not covered in the most important areas of the med field such as of many surgeries or medicines. No one knows when changes in life may occur where healthcare is needed, that’s why Hillary Clinton Is trying to provide America great healthcare at low costs or no costs at all so we can all be covered in such critical instances.

12 Example Introduction 2:
Architecture has been around since man found a place to hide from the elements. Many empires have created and designed wonderful pieces of architecture, and they have changed the world. Architecture today has more than just the purpose of design, architecture goes hand and hand with the environment, this form of architecture is called Green Architecture. Right now there is the issue of Global Warming, some people chose to believe it some people believe that it doesn’t exist, but no one can deny that the world is changing and our pollution is affecting that change. Some people will say “well who cares it’s just pollution, I stay indoors anyways.” The problem is the more the pollution is in the air the harder it will be on the environment, and as with the issue of Global Warming it will begin to get hotter and hotter. So even though you stay indoors all day you electricity bill will go up, which then affects your wallet. Architects have the chance to give back to the environment by making buildings that are self sustaining. A self sustaining building can provide its own light, power, and is made of environmentally friendly materials. The question is Green Architecture worth the cost, will the benefits be justified?

13 Example Introduction 3:
“Today seems to be turning out to be a nice summer day. We will be experiencing a high of 10 degrees Fahrenheit and, later in the night, a low of -60 degrees Fahrenheit.” Your initial reaction to this may be that you would never hear of that kind of temperature in Lubbock, but the truth is it may not be as far fetched as you think. Today’s most widely used resource as a fuel is drilled oil. Oil is used throughout the world for many implications such as machinery and a fuel to power our cars, but are we depending on oil to heavily. Human should cease to heavily rely on oil because of affects on the environment and our climate.
