Population Geography
2
Studying Population Demography: the statistical study of human populations. Maps, Graphs, Population Pyramids, & Spatial Perspective are used to study populations. used to forecast what future populations will be like
3
Population Density The average number of people living in an area.
Usually express in persons per square mile
4
Population Distribution
90% of people live in the Northern Hemisphere 2/3 of people live in the middle latitudes People live in areas favorable for settlement Mild climates, fertile soil, & a supply of fresh water
5
Population Change 3 Factors for Population Change:
1.) Birthrate- number of births each year for every 1,000 people living in an area. 2.) Death rate- total number of deaths each year for every 1,000 people. 3.) Migration- the process of moving from one place to live in another.
6
Migration Refugee- people forced to leave their homes
Emigrants- people that leave a country to live somewhere else. Immigrants- people who come to a new country to live
7
What Causes Migration?? Push Factor- cause people to leave an area
Environmental hazards, droughts, war Pull Factor- attracts people to a new location Economic reason, jobs, pay, living conditions
8
Natural Increase Based on births and deaths not migration
Subtract birthrate from death rate
9
Demographic Transition
1st Stage: both birthrates & death rates are high Many children are born Poor heath conditions mean short life span 2nd Stage: death rates begin to fall Improvements in medicine and healthcare 3rd Stage: both birthrates and death rates are low Economically advanced countries are at this stage
10
Population Pyramids Graph showing the percentage of males and females by age group in a country’s population.
