Interindividual differences in the burden of common variants (green) associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the less-documented contributions of rare variants (red), add to the germline (inherited) genome contribution to aging. During life, there are dynamic changes of the genome at cellular and tissue level—through somatic mutation (increase n number of red loci) and telomere shortening (yellow) and loss of integrity and number of the chromosomes.
