5.5.tpi.3- Identify involvement of Tennessee natives in WWI (i.e., Admiral Albert Gleaves, Admiral William Caperton, and Sergeant Alvin York).

Admiral Albert Gleaves
From Nashville, TN. He is know as one of the country’s best naval leaders. He was good friends with President Roosevelt. He headed the torpedo boat- The Cushing He was in command of the Destroyer Force of the Atlantic Fleet in WWI. He organized Atlantic convoys. Not a signal soldier lost their lives in the convoys.

Admiral William Caperton
From Spring Hill, TN. He was Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War I. He helped create goodwill between the US and the allies in WWI.

Sergeant Alvin York From Pall Mall, TN.
One of the most decorated soldiers from WWI. He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German soldiers, and capturing 132 others.
