Anton van Leeuwenhoek In 1600’s – first to see living organisms w/microscope in pond water Invented 100s microscopes “Wee little beasties”

Robert Hooke In 1665 - examined cork from the bark of a tree
Observed tiny boxes – he was 1st to name “cells” Looked like monastery cells

Schleiden and Schwann In the 1830’s – Schleiden – plants Schwann – animals Concluded that all plants & animals made up of cells

Rudolf Virchow In 1855, Through investigations showed that the origins of cells was the division of pre- existing cells.

Cell Theory – 1840s All living things are composed of cells.
Cells are the basic units of structure & function in all living things. (organization) New cells are produced from existing cells.
