Sanctify = to make different (change), to set apart, to make holy. Holy originally simply means “special, different, devoted to God”. That which makes believers different from unbelievers is their negative attitude to sin, just like God, to whom they are devoted. Thus “holy” means “without sin”.

15 Sin, Justification and Sanctification
Joe could swear like a trooper. And sometimes he did. He hated it. He did not want to offend God. When it would happen, he would always stop dead in his tracks and pray for forgiveness. He was convinced God did forgive him. He also prayed that the Spirit might help him not to swear. And, as he got older, he noticed that he swore less and less. Obivously God was helping him.

17 Doing good A believer and an unbeliever both donate $100 to the Red Cross. Are both doing a good work?

18 Doing good 91. Q. But what are good works?
A. Only those which are done a. out of true faith, b. in accordance with the law of God, and c. to His glory, and not those based on our own opinion or on precepts of men. All three (a,b&c) conditions must be fulfilled before God will consider a work ‘good’.

19 What is good? In the Bible ‘good’ always means ‘suited for its purpose.’ And the purpose of man is: to image God. Man images God by his deeds when his deeds - display trust in God’s choice as to what is good - are what God wants us to do - bring glory to God’s Name

20 Baptism Lord’s Supper Forgiven Renewed Part of the Church

21 Baptism & Lord’s Supper
Baptism and Lord’s Supper assure us of - the forgiveness of our sins (justification) - renewal by God’s Spirit to do good (sanctification) - belong to God and to Christ’s body (covenant communion)
