September 2008 doc.: IEEE /XXXXr0 November 2008 Background IEEE 802 Tutorial on Handovers with Broadcast Technologies given during July‘s Denver meeting Broadcast networks need a bidirectional technology for uplink channel Technology‘s State of the art: 3GPP + DVB/ MediaFLO/ DMB Covers partially uplink channel problems and the coverage problems Commercial products capable of rudimentary HO between 3GPP-DVB-H Indoor DigitalTV coverage problem exists in Europe DVB Project looking at WLAN as a solution to the problem New Task Group to focus on Handovers with Broadcast Technologies Soon to be approved Burak Simsek, Juan Carlos Zuniga

Proposed Solution for Indoor Coverage Problem of DVB
September 2008 doc.: IEEE /XXXXr0 November 2008 Proposed Solution for Indoor Coverage Problem of DVB Use WLAN indoors and enable handovers between and DVB Solution may be relevant to work in IEEE aa Burak Simsek, Juan Carlos Zuniga .

September 2008 doc.: IEEE /XXXXr0 November 2008 Handover Scenarios While watching TV in the train/bus back to home (DVB-H) Entering the bus/train station there will be DVB coverage problems but WLAN could be available Moving in city centre with high buildings, in tunnels, in underground parking, etc. all cause coverage problems, so handover to WLAN While listening to radio over a broadcast technology (DVB-T) Entering into a building with WLAN coverage and no mobile DVB While watching a film with DVB-T at home with a special antenna (i.e. no mobility) DVB network decides to move the service to WLAN because not enough people are interested in that particular film (no broadcast any more) Other... Some Problem Areas to be Analysed
September 2008 doc.: IEEE /XXXXr0 November 2008 Some Problem Areas to be Analysed Synchronization Broadcast networks are closed, mostly one hop networks WLAN option is in most cases IPTV in an open network In cases where network operator is the same the problem is significantly mitigated Not necessarily IEEE 802 Problem… Coexistence? Other??? Burak Simsek, Fraunhofer Inst. et al.

September 2008 doc.: IEEE /XXXXr0 November 2008 Next steps PAR/5C on Handovers with Broadcast Technologies soon to be approved (802.21b?) DVB Project will start a Work Item on the subject in November 2008 DVB Project has decided to consider as the candidate technology for enabling these handovers Home entertainment + mobile Services: Especially for operators handover between and DVB is important Many companies have broadcast units Collaboration between aa and (b?) would be benefitial for both groups Burak Simsek, Juan Carlos Zuniga .
