THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE, 1803
U.S. sought to buy New Orleans from France in order to protect the future use of the Mississippi R. as the country grew France offered the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. Jefferson began the idea of expanding the U.S. from sea to sea in order to protect the U.S. from unfriendly borders

LOUIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION 1804 - 1806
Goals to find route to the Pacific Ocean, bring back as much information and examples of the region as possible, and learn about and make contacts with the Native Americans Trip took 18 months and covered nearly 4,000 miles Resulted in much new information about the region and its people, including animals, plants, waterways, and climate
