How can you identify a function from various forms?
Key Terms: Ordered Pairs, Domain & Range, and Mapping
3
In groups of 3 at your seat, list all you can about this table.
Is it a function? What is the rule? What would the map look like?
4
How can you identify a function from a table?
Equations: Matching the equation with the table can be done by plugging in an x value and seeing if the equation will give you the correct y value in the table. Y2-y1/x2-x1 using this to check if each pair has the same slope. It does not matter which y you pick for 1 or 2 just be sure to use the same x for x1 that goes with the y you used for y1. Same for the y2 and x2.
5
Find is this a function? use slope equation at least twice
6
Ordered Pairs The location of a point on a plane is called its coordinates or its ordered pair. Ordered Pairs are written in x,y order: (x,y) or (1,2) A set of ordered pairs create a function when none of the x values have more than one y value.
8
This set of ordered pairs represents a function.
(0,0),(1, 4),(2, 8),(3, 12),(4, 16) Which ordered pair can be included in the set so that it still represents a function? F (0,5) G (1, 4) H (3,8) J (5, 20)
9
Domain & Range The domain is the run part of a function or the x values: (only write each x value once) The range is the rise part of a function or the y values: (1,2); (4,5); (6,9); (7, 12) Domain: 1,4,6,7 Range : 2, 5,9,12
10
Mapping Mapping is putting all the domains in one group and all the ranges in another group. Then you draw a line connecting the domains to their range. If a domain connects to more than one range then the set is NOT a function. It is okay for a range to match more than one domain.
12
Mapping 2 5 7 9 2 4 6
13
Which mapping represents a relation that is a function?
14
Your turn Write the order pairs for the points marked:
List the domain and the range Map the domain and the range
15
Challenge What would the y value be if x was -3:
16
The Vertical Line Test Any graph is a function if you can draw a vertical line through only one point at a time. (You can use your pencil to follow the graph. If your pencil is touching two points on a graph at the same time then the graph is not a function.)
18
Practice Which of the following represents a function?
19
Tic-Tac-Think Name the function of the table:
Do the order pairs form a function? (2,5) (0,4) (5,0) (2, -4) Name 2 things you learned about functions. (3,5) (-1,6) (2,-5) (-4, -4) What is a domain and range? (0,-2) (0,4) (-7,0) (2, -4) Describe Mapping and give an example. x 5 7 9 y 18 24 30 x -1 1 y 7 5 3 x -6 -3 3 y 8 4 -4
