Learning objectives: In this lesson, students will:
Explore how a character is presented to the audience by the author through stage directions and through the character’s own actions Contrast two characters from Act 1 Vary sentence structure and vocabulary to improve answers on characters Discuss the LOs and explain how they will be taught. Students will spend 5-10 minutes working on the presentation of their books. This is to include ruling margins, correcting spelling, finishing work etc.

Reading We will read to the end of act 1, p24-31.
I need readers for the following characters: Stanhope Osborne Mason Hibbert Stage directions Reading should be in the form of student volunteers. It is a performance reading. It should take 15 minutes.

Hibbert “It’s this beastly neuralgia.”
“I’m damn sorry to keep on talking about it.” A small, slightly built man in his early twenties .. A little moustache and a pallid face. ..gently rubbing his face (says) faintly Hibbert’s actions – what he says and does Discuss these quotes about Hibbert. How is he presented to us? (3 minutes) Stage directions – Sherriff’s descriptions

Stanhope’s opinion of Hibbert
“Another little worm trying to wiggle home.” “He thinks he’s going to wiggle off before the attack.” “How long’s he been out here? Three months, I suppose. Now he’s decided he’s done his bit.” “Pure bloody funk ... Artful little swine! Neuralgia’s a splendid idea. No proof, as far as I can see.” Discuss these quotes – a) what do they say about Stanhope and b) what do they tell us about Hibbert? (7 minutes)

Character questions Write a paragraph for each answer: Use quotations to support your point; embed them where possible Use PEE to form basic answers; vary vocabulary and sentence structure to push onwards Discuss and explain the tasks. (3 minutes)

Character questions What is your impression of Hibbert from page 24 and 25? In what way does Sherriff present Hibbert as a contrast to Stanhope? Stanhope does not like the idea of ‘hero worship’; why do you think he feels this way? p26-28 Students should spend 5-8 minutes per question. They should aim to get at least two questions done. Higher level and faster workers will get three done.
