2. English Want Colonies in America
After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, England felt confident she could whip Spain in future wars. The English were now brave enough to colonize in America

3. Mercantilism
To become rich and powerful, the English needed raw materials.
She sent expeditions to America to set up colonies
These colonies would provide raw materials for English manufactured goods and provide a market for finished products
This economic system is called MERCANTILISM

4. Two Early Colonies Fail
Sir Walter Raleigh was sent to America by Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1585.
The first colony of Roanoke failed when the Indians refused to give the settlers food. Those that didn’t starve to death went back home.

5. Raleigh Tries Again
Sir Walter Raleigh tried once more to colonize Roanoke, Virginia a year later.
He left the colony in America to return to England for supplies. When he got back, everyone was gone.

6. Joint – Stock Companies
Sir Walter Raleigh had used his own money to finance the failed colonies at Roanoke. He went broke.
Learning from his mistakes, investors joined together to form joint – stock companies. They pitched money in so no one person would lose everything if the colony failed.

7. Jamestown, Virginia
In 1607, the Virginia Company of London sailed up the James River in Virginia and formed the first permanent English colony in North America.
The colony was named Jamestown after King James.

8. Virginia House of Burgesses
The Virginia House of Burgesses was created in 1619.
It was the FIRST REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE AMERICAN COLONIES.

9. Jamestown Struggles
The people of Jamestown struggled. They battled starvation, disease, and Native Americans.
