Assignment Description
Working in groups of 1-4 students, you will be demonstrating your knowledge of the nervous system through the creation of a story book that an elementary school student would understand and enjoy reading. Your final product will cover two main areas: General description of structures and functions of the nervous system. In-depth description of a specific aspect of the nervous system.

To include in the “general” section:
Function of the nervous system. How the nervous system helps the rest of the body. Neuron structure & function. Central nervous system structure & function. Peripheral nervous system structure & function. Special senses. How to keep your nervous system healthy. Appropriate illustrations.

To include in the “specific” section:
Name & description of your specific topic. What is wrong with the nervous system. Symptoms & treatments. How this phenomenon works. Possible topics: Disorders People Other Alzheimer’s Lou Gehrig optical illusions Epilepsy Muhammad Ali Stroke Michael J. Fox Dementia Pope John Paul II Headache Stephen Hawking Multiple Sclerosis Christopher Reeve Seizure Joni Erickson Tada Meningitis Concussion Quadri-/Paraplegia

Other aspects to consider:
Catchy title Should your book have a theme? Character (fictional or famous person)? Alien investigation? ??? Other supporting materials? PowerPoint? Images or brief video clip? Poster? Costumes?

PRESENTATION You will read your book (or a portion of it) to an elementary student on May 15 Include at least 1 support material (PPT, images, video clip, etc) Your presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes total! Keep the “general” section brief! Focus on your detailed part
