Migration means a movement and in human terms usually means a change in home.
Emigration: migration from a place.
Immigration: migration into a place

3. Types of Migration cont.
SEMI- PERMANENT
For several years – eg Migrant workers (Turks to Germany)
SEASONAL
For several months or weeks – eg Mexican harvesters in California, University students
DAILY
Commuters – eg SE England

4. Push/Pull Factors
Push Factor: the conditions in the home country that makes a person want to leave
Pull Factors: The advantageous conditions in the receiving country that may make a person move there.

7. Voluntary Migration
This is the free movement of migrants looking for an improved quality of life and personal freedom. For example:
Employment – either to find a job, to earn a higher salary or to avoid paying tax.
Pioneers developing new areas
Trade and economic expansion
Territorial expansion
Better climate, especially on retirement
Social amenities such as hospitals, schools and entertainment.
To be with friends and family

8. What might be a cause of forced migration?

9. Forced Migration
This is when the migrant has no personal choice but has to move due to natural disaster or to economic or social imposition. For example:
Religious and/or political persecution
Wars, creating large numbers of refugees
Forced labour as slaves or prisoners of war
Racial discrimination
Lack of food due to famine
Natural disasters caused by floods, drought, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or hurricanes
Overpopulation, when the number of people living in an area exceeds the resources available to them

10. Refugees
Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their home country for fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, politics, internal strife (civil war) or due to environmental disaster.

11. What could be some obstacles that stop people from migrating?

12. Intervening obstacles:
Problems or difficulties that you might experience before you migrate or while you are migrating.
No passport or visa
Shortage of money
Fear of being a victim of crime while migrating
Arrest for illegal entry into countries
