2 CONJUNCTION Connects words or groups of words.

4 CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTION
Five pairs: Whether...or Neither...nor Both...and Either...or Not only...but also

5 EXAMPLES Whether the shark swims near the beach or remains out at sea, is the concern of the tourists. Emma likes to play both basketball and soccer. You may select either the vacation or the car for your prize.

6 CLAUSE A unit that contains a subject and a verb, that can exist on its own. It was raining. She asked to be left alone.

7 DEPENDENT CLAUSE A clause that cannot exist on its own.
Because it was raining, I took my umbrella. “I took my umbrella” can exist on its own “Because I was raining” cannot, so it relies on subordinating conjunctions.

8 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION
Joins larger groups of words within sentences (clauses and dependent clauses) Because Grandma was upset, she asked to be left by herself. After Andy parked his new car, his sister asked for a ride. Our goalie, Caroline, looked as if she could block any shot.

9 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
After Although As As far as As if As long as As soon as As though Because Before Even though If In order that Since So that Than Though Unless Until When Whenever Where Wherever while
