1 would push the nation closer to war resulting in the Civil War.
During the New South time period the state of Georgia attempted an image change. They wanted to be seen as an industrial center, instead of a state that only produced cotton. This period of history marks a growing divide between Georgia and the northern states. While the northern states’ economy was based on industry, the southern economy was based upon agriculture, primarily on slave producing cotton. This ethical and economic divide would push the nation closer to war resulting in the Civil War. Georgia transformed from a rural to an urban state as the changes in farm technology ended the need for a large agricultural work force. During this time period, Atlanta became a large enough city to field three major league sports teams. The bloodiest war in American history was a defining moment in military history because it is considered the beginning of modern warfare. The War caused massive casualties, massive destruction to the South and it change the face of this country. The War also gave a new birth of freedom with the free of the slaves and introduced a period of conflict known as Reconstruction. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of both the original Georgia constitution and the Articles of Confederation. Assess how weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation led to a need to revise the Articles. Describe the role of Georgia at the Constitutional Convention including the role of Abraham Baldwin and William Few. Describe the reasons why Georgia ratified the new constitution. The state of Georgia helped the WWI efforts by creating military training bases and installations are building victory gardens. During WWII Bell Aircraft in Marietta built B-29 Bombers (war planes), the state also served as military training bases. Our state was able to easily train and deploy military members because of our climate, and the use of our railways and shipping ports. This period following the founding of our country marks a great change in the state of Georgia. Georgia settlers were moving west because inventions like the cotton gin and railroad opened up farmland and resources. However, this westward expansion and technological growth came at a cost. This period of time would also mark great bloodshed and turmoil with the removal of the native populations. The period of Reconstruction was time of great political, social and racial change in the Southern US following the Civil War. Many historians would call it the second Civil War because of all the conflict and social change that occurred in the South. The Great Depression was a time period of desperation. People lost their land and homes due to bad debt, the drought and boll weevil. The New Deal brought programs that helped to build parks, roads and schools. The Roaring 20’s, known for new conveniences and flair, came to Georgia, but were short lived. The boll weevil and drought destroyed our cotton crops and negatively impacted our economy during the 1920’s. Though African-Americans had been fighting for civil rights before the Civil War, the “modern” Civil Rights Movement finally achieved many of the goals that African-Americans had been working toward for centuries. These included achieving voting rights and the end to government sponsored segregation. Becoming the 9th largest state in the United States, Georgia produced a President and a Speaker of the House.
