2 Bell Ringer Complete the rhetorical device bell ringer for the day!

3 Rhetorical Modes: Process Analysis
Process Analysis is a type of expository (explanatory) writing that explains how something is done or was done in the past. Texts using process analysis often read like a how-to; although, process analysis also can be used within other types of writing as well. The choice to use this rhetorical mode is strategic. Discuss: what rhetorical purpose(s) could process analysis serve?

4 Rhetorical Modes: Process Analysis
Discuss: Where have we seen process analysis in BNW so far, and how has it been used rhetorically?

5 Claims and how they develop
When we read rhetorically, we have to consider TWO OR MORE perspectives: The author The narrator Individual characters Each of these key players will be making claims about the major subjects presented in the text. They could make similar claims, or the claims can be different. To figure out which claims the author wants us to believe, we have to consider elements like characterization, tone, mood, irony, etc.

6 Claims and how they develop
Think: If a character is characterized as dictatorial, unfair, uncaring, and self-serving, do you think the author would likely want us to believe the characters claim? The author could use the character’s claims ironically.

7 Claims and how they develop
How to identify a claim: -A judgment about something (good, bad, pretty, beneficial, detrimental, valuable, worthless, etc) -Must be debatable—there must be a potential counterclaim. Claims can be DIRECTLY STATED or IMPLIED!

8 Rhetorical Modes: Process Analysis
Read the short poem by Benjamin Franklin. Start by reading it once without analysis, identifying vocabulary you don’t know and looking it up! Then, read it again for the claims Ben Franklin makes. Finally, consider how and why he uses process analysis.

9 Identifying and tracking arguments in BNW
