Case Study - AFL AFL takes a strategic approach around effectiveness of senior coaches. AFL team uses Hogans for coaches and players.

AFL Research AFL/STRIDE report around coaching. 5 competencies identified – technical skills, personal qualities, communication, management and leadership. Identifies need for personality profiling to test for relationships with people, personal character and personal characteristics working with players and coaching staff.

Recommends using profiling to understand coaches strengths and weaknesses. Uses similar language to our leadership model, IQ/EQ, working in and on the business. AFL Research

AFL Team uses Hogan 45 assessments conducted involving coaches, assistant coaches, players. Team building workshop for all…individual results shared to understand self, each other and the team. Use of human histograms to have fun and create awareness… remember there is no right or wrong.

Spaghetti charts used to profile coaching group, the players and then the forwards, centers and defence. Follow-up workshop with coaching group to identify actions for greater use of Hogan. AFL Team uses Hogan

Analysis of Hogan Data 60% of players have the moving away syndrome…emotionally withdrawing when under stress, tuning out as a coping mechanism. How should the coaches communicate when they have shut down? Only 2 of the 9 player leadership group have a natural leadership style…guess how the group was selected? How much on field leadership will they provide during the game?

6 players have substantial anxiety issues…low moods/dissatisfaction with lifes achievements. The coaches had a mixed personality style…some had IQ/EQ and some had just the IQ (technical skills). Analysis of Hogan Data

Next Steps Coaching sessions for the coaches and the assistant coaches around their Hogan profiles. These coaching sessions to include analysis of individual players and how best to coach them. Individual players to have coaching sessions.

Review the selection and composition of the player leadership group. Use Hogan profiling in the annual draft of young players. Develop Hogan capability to improve the game plan. Start using the language of IQ/EQ, and working in and on the business. Decisions Made
