What do we know so far? Leading Patriot before and during the Revolution Member of the Committee of Five and worked on the Declaration of Independence Convinced France to be an American ally during the Revolutionary War Negotiated the Treaty of Paris in 1783

Election of 1796 Beat Thomas Jefferson who was Democratic-Republican (71-68 in the Electoral College) Jefferson became the Vice President They had difficulty getting along

Adams as president Alien and Sedition Acts XYZ Affairs
Alien Act: gave the government the right to deport any immigrant Sedition Act: gave the government the right to criminalize anyone who spoke out against the government Jefferson and Madison argued in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions that states could refuse to enforce federal laws Adams sent 3 delegates to France to negotiate peace. France turned them away and basically said they would have to pay to take to the French foreign minister Congress found out and ordered the names of the 3 delegates who Adams submitted as “X, Y, and Z” This led to a call of action in a war known as a “quasi-war” which was a small, undeclared war. It was eventually settled
