What is Matter? Physical Science
Ch. 1-1 What is Matter? Physical Science
2
1.1 What is Matter Objectives Name the two properties of all matter. Describe how volume and mass are measured. Explain the relationship between mass and inertia. New Terms Matter Inertia Volume Meniscus Mass Gravity Weight Newton
3
Everything in the universe you can touch (even if you can't see it) is made of matter.
Matter is anything that has volume and mass. Volume is the amount of space taken up or occupied by an object. What are examples of things that have volume?
4
Measuring The Volume of Liquids
The Atlantic Ocean has about 305 billion liters of sea water in it. That is 152 billion 2 liter bottles. You can measure liquid volume by pouring it in a measuring device, like a graduated cylinder. Meniscus - the curve at the liquids surface in a graduated cylinder. We use liters to measure volume.
5
Volume of Solids We use cubic units. Cubic means "having three dimension”. For solids we use length x height x width. We use meters or centimeters to measure volume of a solid. 1 ml = 1 cm3
6
Volume of Gases A gas will expand to fill the container. If you know the volume of the container then you know the volume of the gas.
7
Matter has Mass Mass - the amount of matter in a substance. Everything that is made of matter has mass. Mass can only be changed by changing the amount of matter in the object.
8
Difference Between Mass and Weight
Gravity - force of attraction between objects because of their masses. The pull created between objects. The effect of gravity on an object is dependent on the mass of the objects and the distance between the objects.
9
Gravitational force is experienced by all objects in the universe at all times, but the gravitational force exerted (given off) by small objects is very slight (not really felt). The Earth has a very strong gravitational force.
10
Weight is a measurement of the gravitational force on an object
Weight is a measurement of the gravitational force on an object. That means that the weight of an object can change depending on it's distance to or from the Earth. So weight and mass are not the same thing!
11
Measuring Mass and Weight
We use grams to express mass. Weight is the gravitational force and so is measured in newton (N). A Newton is equal to the weight of a 100 g mass on Earth. (pg 9)
12
Mass is a measure of inertia - Inertia is the tendency of all objects to resist any change in motion. An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion until something acts on it.
