Common Core Math I Unit 1 Day 3 One-Variable Statistics

Warm- Up 1.How many students were in the first-hour class? 2. How many and What percentage of students stacked more than 40 pennies using their dominant hand? 3.Describe the shape and center of the plot in context. 4.What do you think the plot for the second period class might look like? Explain.

Homework Check

Number of Siblings Give each student a small sticky note and ask them to write down the number of siblings that they have. (Do not tell them whether to count step- or half-siblings. When it comes up, let them decide as a group. This brings out the idea of clearly defining what/how you are measuring things.) Have them place the sticky notes on the number line, stacking repeats. Discuss how they have created a dot plot of the data. Ask students to describe the distribution of number of siblings (shape, center, spread, outliers). Also make a point to discuss spacing between “dots” and how it is important for them to be equal spaced.

How Many Buttons Are You Wearing???
2. Record your info on your number line. 3.Record your other classmates information. 4. On your own paper make a number line so that you can make a dot plot with this information. (where should it start? How far should it go? What should the scale be?) 5. Below your dot-plot write a description of the data. REMEMBER SHAPE, CENTER, SPREAD, OUTLIERS Discuss. Have one person from each table read description.

Dotplot Histogram Can be used for both categorical or quantitative data Good for a rough sketch of data Only used for quantitative data Histograms have continuous intervals for data. Good for larger data sets.

Fast Food Histograms Work with your neighbor.
Using one fast food card, create a histogram on your calculator of the number of Calories in each sandwich. On a separate piece of paper describe the data. REMEMBER: SOCS! Repeat for 3 (total) fast food restaurants. Turn in 3 descriptions per pair.

Exit Ticket What is important to include in a description of a data distribution? Describe two of the four shapes of data distributions. For each type give an example of a data set that would have that shape (not the actual data, just a description). When is it better to make a histogram vs. a dot plot?
