Figure 1 The “defendothelium” of the liver sinusoid. Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) sense and respond to viruses, releasing type I and type III interferons (IFN)s. These further up-regulate antiviral functions in the LSECs themselves, as well as triggering responses in hepatocytes and other cells within the liver. Release of antiviral exosomes from the LSECs as described by Giugliano et al3 may amplify this signal or bypass blocks in IFN signaling within hepatocytes. LSECs may also cross-talk with T-cell and natural killer (NK) cell populations within the liver to accelerate cellular responses.
