Enzymes
2
(1000's of reactions per second!)
What is an Enzyme? 1. An enzyme is a catalyst 2. A catalyst speeds up a reaction without being used itself 3. Small amounts of enzyme can catalyze large amounts of substrate. (1000's of reactions per second!) Enzymes in Action
3
5.Enzymes usually end in -ase
4. Enzymes are a protein 5.Enzymes usually end in -ase Ex. protease, lipases, maltase, sucrase Examples: Septic tank cleaner and meat tenderizer
5
6.Enzyme reactions are controlled reactions
7.Enzymes are NOT used up but recycled 8. An enzyme works on a substrate and is specific to the substrate
6
Factors that Affect Enzymes
Temperature a. Enzymes work best at specific temperatures b. As temperature increased the rate of reaction increases c. At very high temperatures the enzyme can become denatured d. Optimal temperatures are usually close to normal cell temperature
7
pH Enzymes work best at a specific pH
Ex. Pepsin and trypsin i. Pepsin works best in slightly acidic environment and is found in the stomach ii. trypsin works best in a slightly basic environment and is found in the small intestines.
