Understand why the Archduke decided to go to Sarajevo
Explain why the assassination could be one of the causes of war

3. THE SLAV PEOPLE What do we know about the Slav people?
The Serbians who were already independent encouraged Bosnia to fight Austria
It is at this point we have the start of the Black Hand…

4. THE BLACK HAND They were Serbian and Bosnian nationalists
It was never difficult to find terrorists volunteers in Bosnia, for there was many students and young men eager to fight the Austrians
The Black Hand in Sarajevo found 6 keen young boys who were prepared to launch an attack on the Archduke when he visited…

5. THE VISIT
28th June Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife visited Sarajevo, in the Austrian province of Bosnia
The Archduke was in Bosnia to inspect the army.
The streets were lined with people, with very limited security
WHY DO YOU THINK THE ARCHDUKE WENT TO BOSNIA WHEN THERE WAS SO MUCH UNREST?

6. GAVRILO PRICIP
Gavrilo Princip, the son of a postman, was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina in July, Gavrilo was one of nine children, six of whom died in infancy. His health was poor and from an early age suffered from tuberculosis.

7. GAVRILO PRICIP
Pricip and the others had been instructed by the Black Hand leaders to all try and kill the Archduke
They would be situated at certain points along the route the car was taken – they were to swallow poison after the attack
One of the activists did try and kill the Archduke with a bomb, however after taking his poison he jumped in the river only to find that the poison was old and didn’t work.

8. He was fished out of the river and arrested
The Archduke’s car sped off to safety
So how did Princip get the Archduke????

9. THE ROUTE
The Archduke insisted on going to the hospital to see those injured by the bomb
This was not official therefore there was no security
The car took a wrong turn and when trying to turn around to go to the hospital it pulled up beside the Schiller’s delicatessen and café
Princip was there feeling sad as he felt his opportunity had passed to kill Ferdinand…
