2 Three Branches of the Federal Government
1- Executive 2- Judicial 3- Legislative Each branch is responsible for carrying out different duties. Dividing the government into separate branches, each with its own powers, is called the separation of powers.

3 Executive Branch Members: President, Vice President, helpers
Function: place all laws into effect and make sure they are carried out Check: Legislative and Judicial

4 Judicial Branch Members: Supreme Court and all lower federal courts
Functions: interprets laws, decides cases in federal laws, and settle trouble between states Checks: Executive and Legislative

5 Legislative Branch Members: Senate, House of Representatives, Congress
Function: the power to create laws needed to successfully run the country Checks: Executive and Judicial

8 Checks and Balances No one of the three branches of the government can become too powerful. To prevent this, the Constitution provides that each part of the government is carefully held in check by the other two.

9 Borrow money to pay expenses
Federalism -Division of power between state and federal government -Constitution gives powers to federal government, powers not listed go to the state Reserved Powers Powers granted to the state governments Laws are different or vary from state to state. Ex: drinking, driving, marriage Delegated Powers Powers granted to the federal government Laws the same in all states Ex: voting, money, stamps, maintain army and navy Concurrent Powers (SHARED POWERS) Impose taxes Establish courts Regulate banks Borrow money to pay expenses Build roads Provide Welfare
