The End of the Republic Julius Caesar lead the Roman army to victories over Gaul (France) and Britain. When he returns, he takes control over Rome because the army is loyal to him.

Caesar helps the poor. He starts building roads and temples to provide employment. Pays for free entertainment to keep Romans happy

The End of the Republic In 45 B.C., Caesar is made “Dictator for Life”. The Senate fears that Caesar will soon become too powerful and ruin the republic. The Senators are also upset because Caesar is popular with the people.

Ides of March (March 15) in 44 B.C. A group of Senators lead by Brutus and Cassius, stab Caesar to death in the Senate.

The End of the Republic Octavian (Caesar’s nephew) and Mark Antony defeat Cassius and Brutus. Octavian and Mark Antony fight each other for power – Battle of Actium Mark Antony is defeated and commits suicide. Octavian gains power and becomes Emperor.
