2 Purpose of EMA Answer such questions as
Provide both student and instructor with information about expectations and performance of a student in the class. See ASEE99 paper for more explanation if interested Answer such questions as What are the student's expectation during this course -- a good pass or an excellent pass? Is the student performing as well as expected during all the course work given course learning curve? Is the student’s performance consistent, or erratic? What can be done to bring a mark to a level needed for a particular career path? Was the quiz set too hard relative to instructor’s intended level of difficulty? 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

3 Earned Marked Analysis Process
Step 1 -- Download spreadsheet Step 2 -- Completed Expected GPA analysis and print out Step 3 -- Complete Planned GPA analysis and print out Remember to save your files so that you can update after quizzes and resubmit EMA analysis across the term is worth 7% of your course mark Step 4 -- Planned and Tracking Submission -- THIS WEEKEND Web form to be submitted by Sunday 9 pm Step Expected and Planned GPA spreadsheets handed in at start of class by start of class (Monday 11:00 am) No marks for late submission -- this is a process Step 5 -- Tracking -- LATER IN TERM AFTER EACH QUIZ Review your quizzes against answers and receive marks for showing that you understand what you did wrong (or right) Check whether you are meeting your planned course mark 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. 5 Spreadsheet Content The INTRODUCTORY page -- Unofficial GPA calculation EXPECTED GPA page -- NO CHANGES AFTER TERM START completed at the start of the term. This mark is based on the probable class average how well the student has done, relative to the class average, in previous courses. The PLANNED GPA page -- NO CHANGES AFTER TERM START Student to make adjustments to the expected GPA to meet some professional or personal requirement. The TRACKED GPA page -- CHANGE AFTER EACH QUIZ/EXAM updated by the student after every in-class quiz. Predicted marks for the current quizzes and laboratories Update previous quizzes and laboratories are updated. The WHATIF page -- A PLANNED GPA YOU CAN CHANGE generate a new PLAN for future labs and quizzes The final page -- adjusting anything in this page will probably cause the spreadsheet to fail or give inaccurate results. 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. 6 Step 2 -- Complete the unofficial EXPECTED GPA prediction page
BE REALISTIC 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

7 Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning
On this page you are asked five questions (GREEN) concerning your performance in previous classes in in-class quizzes, laboratories, midterms, final exams and when the class does new activities. Don't modify other sections of the page. Place one of the following responses in the answer box to the right of each question. indicating that your normal performance is well above the class average +5 -- little above the class average 0 -- around class average -5 -- little below class average well below class average Remember -- GIGO -- BE REALISTIC! There are NO MARKS for HIGH MARK Just MARKS FOR DOING THE PREDICTION SENSIBLY 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

8 Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning
Calculates unofficial expected GPA for the each course component based on your performance in previous classes relative difficulty of each course component based on previous classes. NOTE -- Range of GPAs rather than an actual mark. Student will not have a stable process (of doing each component) so that there is about a 10% inaccuracy in each individual prediction. Final prediction is more accurate that the individual predictions. Error associated with the individual predictions tend to cancel 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

9 Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning
Steep learning curve associated with this course based around learning how to use a new type of processor and language with parallel capabilities. Note that the marks associated with each GPA level range are set at the start of the course and there is not a moving target. Meet the instructor's expectations, then everybody gets an A. Once completed, this web page of your expected GPA for each course component remains unchanged for the rest of the term. 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

10 Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning
Be realistic 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

11 Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning
Adjust the EXPECTED GPA prediction to better reflect what your own expectations, or needs, are for the course. For example, your previous performance may indicate a B+, but you want to adjust the course components to find out what is necessary to get the A or A- grade you want for personal satisfaction or a job requirement. REMEMBER Fast initial learning curve associated with this course so don’t change marks for early components much 5 % change -- easy 8% change -- possible more than 10% -- unlikely unless you change your learning process (habits) 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

12 Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning
As with all process planning, have realistic expectations. You will not get an accurate prediction if you give yourself a 100% on each component of the course. Note that the instructor expects that everybody will do well on each laboratory (mark of A/A-) but does not expect that every student will complete every component of every laboratory -- average mark around 80%. Getting greater than 85% on ENCM515 quizzes on a regular basis is unlikely. I mark hard and take that into account by giving an A for 85% Once completed, this web page of your predictions for each course component remains unchanged for the rest of the term. 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

13 Step 4 -- Submission of Planning EMA
Print off using Laser Printer Expected GPA spreadsheet Planned GPA spreadsheet I don’t want the metrics print out -- you keep it. Due Monday Morning a.m. START CLASS Transfer information to ENCM515 Tracking Web-Form Due Sunday Evening -- 9 p.m. SHARP This is a “process” WITH DEADLINES -- no marks for late submission or hand-in Only I will see the information when Name or ID is attached 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

14 Remember! Print out a copy of your prediction for your records
Save the .xls file as you will need it five times during the term Don’t change EXPECTED or PLANNED pages after this point as you have made a prediction against which you can then track If you want to make a NEW PLAN then move marks over to WHAT-IF 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

15 Later in the term Want to track how well you are actually doing compared to you plan 5% between actual and planned GPA on an individual course activity -- means nothing in terms of final GPA After each quiz Update the marks you know (earlier labs and quizzes) Estimate the marks you don’t know (current labs and quizzes) Don’t change things you have not yet done (future labs and quizzes) 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

16 Step 5 -- After Each Quiz 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

17 Step 5 -- After each Quiz Immediately following each in-class quiz you will be provided with the answers for that quiz. Knowing how well you did on the quiz is a useful review process Marks for accurate performance of this activity. Easy marks if you take the task seriously Useful as a review process which is why I allocate marks for the analysis You may have said -- I would have got more marks if I had time to check things -- Here is the time to get those marks 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

18 Step 5 -- Marks for quiz analysis
Predict the mark you expect to obtain for each question and the overall exam. Submit via a web-form Accuracy expected +- 10%. Marks you receive for this evaluation is determined entirely by the accuracy of your prediction. REMEMBER -- more than one answer typically possible -- think about whether you have an “alternative answer” or else you’ll lose prediction marks. Use this information to update your ACTUAL predicted web page. Modify the spreadsheet to reflect any marks received for previous quizzes and laboratories. If a mark has not been returned -- provide a reasonable estimate -- after all you know how much of the lab you completed -- Marks will be lost for not providing estimates 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

19 Step 5 -- Tracking If your planned and actual performance are within 5%, then within in the limits of the accuracy of the process, you are progressing as planned. If you are concerned regarding your performance in the course, please remember that I have an open-door policy -- Bring in an updated EMA with you 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

20 Step 6 -- What IF prediction
Expected GPA -- do not modify page after the start of the term Planned GPA -- do not modify page after the start of the term Tracking spreadsheet -- update as term progresses If you want to CHANGE your Planned GPA analysis then transfer values to the WHAT-IF page of the spreadsheet 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

21 Step 6 -- What if -- new plan
Unchanged!!! 2/19/2019 ENCM Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith --

22 Recap -- Earned Marked Analysis
