The nutritional and dietary needs of people will vary according to the life stage they are at, which are categorised into the following groups of people: - babies - toddlers - pre-school children - school aged children - adolescents - adults - older people pregnant and lactating women. As part of the GCSE course you need to be aware of the needs of the above groups.

Find the correct foods for the following: Pregnant women need to have a high quantity of fibre in their diet to prevent constipation. Identify 5 foods high in fibre. Pregnant women should avoid certain foods to prevent harm to the foetus. Identify 2 foods that pregnant women should avoid to eat.

Pregnant women should avoid a high vitamin A intake to prevent possible birth defects in the baby. Identify 2 foods that have a high vitamin A content. Pregnant women should ensure that they obtain sufficient folate to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. Identify 3 foods that are high in folate.

Elderly people should ensure that they receive sufficient vitamin B12 to prevent anaemia and potential memory loss. Identify 4 number of foods that are high in vitamin B12. Elderly people often suffer from a lack of vitamin D due to less exposure to sunlight. Identify 2 foods that are high in vitamin D.

Adults are often less active due to having sedentary jobs. Identify 4 foods that are suitable for reducing their energy intake. Teenagers need to base their diet on starchy carbohydrates to provide long lasting energy and prevent them snacking in between meals. Identify 4 foods that are starchy complex carbohydrates.

School aged children are going through a period of rapid growth so need a good supply of protein. Identify 6 foods that are high in protein. Preschool children need a good supply of calcium to build strong bones and teeth. Identify 4 foods that are high in calcium.

Toddlers should not be given skimmed milk as this reduces their fat soluble vitamin intake. Identify 3 foods that are high in vitamin A. After 6 months a baby’s iron supply is depleted and sufficient iron must be obtained from the food they are weaned onto. Identify 4 foods that that are high in iron.
