2 # 4 Periodic Table Activity Procedures
Directions: Using your textbook pages 21D-22D complete the activity below. Obtain a copy of the periodic table. Label the groups (columns) 1-18 at the top of each column. Label the periods (rows) 1-7 on the left side of your periodic table. Using a dark color, draw a zig zag line separating the metals from non metals. This is called the stair case line. Lightly color the metals yellow, non metals green, and metalloids purple. Make a key on the front of the pd table. Define the following terms (6) on the front of your periodic table: nonmetals, metals, metalloids, groups, periods, and stair case line. Provide at least on example or fact for each.

3 Obtain a copy of the periodic table from your teacher
Before doing this activity

4 # 4 Discussion Points – Periodic Table
How is the atomic mass number different from the atomic number? How is the modern periodic table organized? How would you classify Boron on the periodic table? Identify the following information about Mg on the periodic table: name, atomic number, atomic mass, protons, neutrons, electrons, and valence electrons. Where would you find Gallium on the periodic table (period and group)? What are valence electrons? How many valence electrons do elements in the following groups have? group 1, group 2, group 13, group 14, group 15, group 16, group 17, and group 18. How many valence electrons are in nitrogen? Explain why elements in each group are placed there? What must happen to form an ion?
