Beneficial, Infectious, and Vaccines
By: Penelope Sidky, Emma Jadwin, Ashley Rossi, and Nick Mitchell
2
Overview How viruses benefit and affect our lives
How to prevent and treat viral diseases Why should you get the flu shot every year How do vaccines work Types of viruses Debate over vaccines
3
Ways that viruses can benefit our lives
A Virus is a nonliving particle made of proteins, nucleic acid, and sometimes lipids "Bacteria eaters" are also called bacteriophages Helps us slim down in the body Works against acne PS
4
Ways viruses harm our lives
Viruses attack and destroy cells in the body Causes symptoms of the associated disease Poliovirus destroys the cells in the nervous system PS
5
How we can prevent viral diseases
The use of vaccines Washing hands frequently to avoid cold and flu viruses caused by hand to mouth contact Avoiding contact with sick individual PS
6
How we can treat viral diseases
Cannot be treated with antibiotics Antiviral drugs attack specific viral enzymes that host cells don’t have Antiviral medication help speed the recovery from flu viruses PS
7
Why should we get the flu shot ?
Influenza vaccines are vaccines that protect against influenza infection It helps prevent long-term illnesses, hospitalization and even death Flu killed and hospitalized more people in the US last winter EJ
8
Why should we get the flu shot? cont.
They have shown reduced severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick Most of them prevent the chance of spreading disease Flu viruses evolve so quickly Last year's vaccine may not protect from this year's flu EJ
9
What does the shot do? They are like a training course for the body
The shots help you develop immunity without getting sick first They contain the same germs of the disease but are weakened so your body can kill them EJ
10
What happens internally after the vaccination?
It usually takes 7-21 days for the 'immune response' Our immune system reacts immediately to create antibodies and memory cells These work to fight the infection, just like if you actually got sick EJ
11
Types of viruses AR Chicken Pox Hepatitis C Mononucleosis
12
Chicken Pox Varicella-Zoster a type of herpes virus
Symptoms include headache and general feeling of being unwell Prescribed Antihistamine The vaccine protects 98% of the body
13
Hepatitis C Viral infection that causes liver inflammation
AR Viral infection that causes liver inflammation Symptoms include fatigue and poor appetite Antiviral medications helps detect Hepatitis C after 12 weeks of treatment Beware of Body piercings and tattoos for clean equipment and sterile needles
14
Mononucleosis also known as the kissing disease
AR Epstein-Barr virus is the most common human viruses Fever Swollen lymph nodes in the neck or armpit By not sharing saliva (ex: sharing a drink) Take care of yourself by getting enough rest
15
Why we SHOULD get vaccinated
NM They protect millions of Americans from viruses People that are not vaccinated can endanger people around them Vaccines protect 322 million illnesses, 21 million hospitalizations, and 732,000 deaths
16
Why we SHOULD get vaccinated
NM Measles and mumps are affecting a fraction of the people Immune system weakens as people get older Older people are more likely to have a chronic condition Viruses change over time
17
Why we SHOULDN'T get vaccinated?
NM Vaccines can cause stimulus A mild reaction can show a weak immune system Vaccines use a weaker verson of the disease
18
Why we SHOULDN'T get vaccinated?
NM Encephalitis and Neurological disorders Disturbing and lasting effects can occur Vaccines are based off the previous year's infections
19
How can you avoid getting the flu and a cold?
Taking 2 showers a day Washing your hands frequently Eat clean or healthy diet Wash bedding twice a week B PS
20
How does Antiviral medication treat viral disease?
Kills cells Cause symptoms of infection Helps speed up recovery They are considered "bacteria eaters" C PS
21
What does your immune system create to fight illnesses?
Amino acids Carbohydrates Memory cells and antibodies Hemoglobin and collagen C EJ
22
What is another name for the flu ?
Epstein-Barr virus Influenza virus Varicella-Zoster virus The flu B EJ
23
What is the first sign of Chicken Pox?
AR Early stage rash Fever Blisters Loss of appetite A
24
Where in the body is Hepatitis C transmitted?
AR The liver The chest The stomach The blood D
25
How many people are saved from illnesses due to vaccines?
NM 510 million 250 thousand 322 million 210 million C
26
What is one of the worst reactions that can be caused from vaccines?
NM The flu A cold Rashes Encephalitis and Neurological D
