The first element is written as its name on the periodic table. The number of Atoms is the prefix for that element.
Ex H2
If the first element has only 1 atom, it does not get a prefix.
The second element is named by:
The prefix indicating the number of atoms
The root of the element’s name
The ending –ide
H2o
If the element name starts with a vowel, the o or a at the end of the prefix is dropped. O
