Steps The first element is written as its name on the periodic table. The number of Atoms is the prefix for that element. Ex H2 If the first element has only 1 atom, it does not get a prefix. The second element is named by: The prefix indicating the number of atoms The root of the element’s name The ending –ide H2o If the element name starts with a vowel, the o or a at the end of the prefix is dropped.
