1. Literacy activity: ‘Annotate the Image’
Objective 1 – to come up with, practice key words for a particular subject.
Objective 2 – to create a learning ‘hook’ with the advantage of a literacy focus (as the focus is topic based but also focuses on parts of speech).
You could have students do this alone or perhaps in pairs.
On slides 3-4 there are images that you can use with your form, but do feel free to add your own if you want to use one from your subject area. If you want to do this slide 5 is set up as a blank model, with space for you to put the picture in.
Ask students to put their answers on paper.
Once each group has finished, they should share answers. Have they all come up with the same key words? Are some more interesting than others?

2. Annotate the image
Rationale – the aim of this activity is to have a learning ‘hook’, which focuses on key words / ideas, but with the added advantage of a literacy focus. The idea is that you have an image that is relevant to your current topic. For added impact the image could be controversial or funny. The students look at the image and start to think of key words that they could use to describe it (this could, for example, reinforce or introduce key words). They then give a word that they would use to describe it, using different literacy headings, e.g. a ‘verb’ that describes the image, an ‘adjective’ that describes the image etc. This, therefore, emphasises their awareness of parts of speech, whilst still being relevant to what you are teaching.
