Presentation on theme: "UPMC Health Plan Employer-to-Employee (E2E) Communication"— Presentation transcript:

1 UPMC Health Plan Employer-to-Employee (E2E) Communication
Developing a network of “habitual advocates” focused on health policy issues

2 The changing face of advocacy
“Business is involved in the political process to get policy results at the local, state and federal levels. That isn’t always as easy as winning any single election or lobbying lawmakers. Effective advocacy now includes influencing public attitudes about critical issues at all levels.” - BIPAC Return on Investment Report, 2014

3 E2E communication builds and strengthens issue-focused credibility, fosters greater issue awareness, increases and sustains greater voter participation and develops HABITUAL ADVOCACY based on policy issues

4 Our proposed strategy Identify the issues that matter
Inform, through credible avenues, our employees how those issues affect them Let them take action on those issues (by communicating with their elected officials) Tell them where candidates and incumbents stand on these issues Provide resources for employees to register to vote and get to the polls Information should be timely, easily accessible and relevant and communicated through a variety of channels Five fingered approach

5 What is Employee Issue Education and Mobilization?
1 Issue education 2 Take Action 3 Provide legislator voting records 4 Provide non-partisan candidate information 5 Be an informed voter 6 Policy success UPMC Employee Engagement

6 Grassroots mobilization
What it is not: We do not tell employees how to vote and, in fact, deeply respect that voting is a personal, private decision We are not partisan We do not focus on issues or positions unrelated to UPMC’s policy priorities What it is: Our goal is to provide employees with the resources to “vote informed” on health policy issues, should they choose to do so.

7 Potential challenges Corporate is not always the best messenger
Reluctance to “bother” or pressure busy employees Many health care employees do not have regular or easy access to computers POTENTIAL SOLUTION: Engage credible leaders who understand the importance of E2E communication in the education and mobilization process
