AIM – Recap what we have learned about the background to the succession crisis and learn about the problem posed by the succession of the Maid.
SUCCESS CRITERIA –
Be able to describe and explain the problems posed by Scotland choosing to accept the maid of Norway as its next monarch.
Be able to describe how events in Scotland evolved towards the succession crisis, from 1249 to 1286.
Share plans for the year ahead in Higher History.
TASKS
1. Copy today’s aim and heading into your jotter.
2. Recap the background causes of the wars of independence, from 1249 up to autumn 1286 using a timeline on today’s PPt.
3. Recap the ‘how fully?’ source question and review our homework submitted before the end of last term, before discussing our expectations from the year ahead.
4. Through class questioning, build a mindmap on the board on the problems of the Maid of Norway as ruler of Scotland. Note this down in your jotter.

: The Golden Age of Scotland.
1286: The death of Alexander III.

5. What happened so far? – Recap:
April 1286: The ‘community of the realm’ decides Alex. III’s granddaughter will succeed him on the throne. They elect 6 Guardians to rule Scotland until she is old enough to rule by herself.
September 1286: The Bruce faction form the ‘Turnberry Band’ and attempt a coup to seize the throne.
: The Guardians have their difficulties, but remain in control.

After a 5-10 mins, share our findings in plenary and add any info you have missed.
