2 The networking media The transmission medium is the physical path by which a message travels from sender to receiver. Transmission media Transmission Guided (wired) Unguided (wireless) Fiber optic cable Air Twised-pair cable i Coaxial cable Coaxial cable Fiber optic cable Ca 2/19/2019 Eng .Haya Radwan Ghsoon

3 The networking media Each media has advantages and disadvantages.
Some of the advantages ore disadvantage comparisons concern: ◊ cable length . ◊ cost. ◊ ease of installation. ◊ susceptibility to interference. 2/19/2019 Eng .Haya Radwan Ghsoon

9 How to make a cable Before learning how to make a cable , you have to know the types of network devices, each device in network can be one of two types: ◊ DCE: data communication equipment's(network end). ◊ DTE: data terminal equipment's (user end). 2/19/2019 Eng .Haya Radwan Ghsoon

10 DTE & DCE THE RULE : IF you decide to connect two devices from the same type (DTE with DTE) or (DCE with DCE) then you have to use a cross cable . If you decide to connect two different devices (DTE with DCE) then you have to use a straight cable. 2/19/2019 Eng .Haya Radwan Ghsoon

15 Ethernet cable instructions
Cut your cable to the desired length . start on one end and strip the cable outer jacket off ( about 1 inch ) using stripper . Spread, untwist the pairs and a arrange the wires in the order of the desired cable end .flatten the end between your thumb and forefinger. Trim the ends of the wires so they are even with one another ,leaving only ½ inch in wire length . Hold the RJ_45 plug with the clip facing down or away from you. push the wires firmly into the plug Check each wire is flat even at the front of the plug. Check the order of the wires. Double check again .check that the jacket is fitted right against the stop of the plug . Carefully hold the wire and firmly crimp the RJ-45 with the crimper. Test the Ethernet cable. 2/19/2019 Eng .Haya Radwan Ghsoon
